This record group consists of various records relating to the draft and Michigan citizens who fought in the Civil War. The record group includes: roster of men furnished to fill draft quota (1862-63); abstracts of registry of drafts (February 1863) of drafted men and their substitutes; report of drafted men (October-November 1863) from the provost marshal and commissioner of draft; reports of draft commissioner (1861-65); and reports from draft rendezvous (1862-65), including list of deserters and rejected men (July 1-December 1, 1864), and numerical reports of volunteers, drafted men and substitutes forwarded from East Saginaw (1862) and Jackson (1864-65).

Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838.
